BURNELL, JAMES M., ELIZABETH J. TEUBNER, AND DAVID P. SIMPSON. bfetabolic acidosis accompanying potasszum deprivation. Am. J. Physiol. 227(2): 329-333. 1974.-Removal of potassium, with or without substitution of an equivalent amount of sodium, from the diet of dogs causes a prompt and persistent decrease in distal H+ secretion resulting in an increase in urine pH. The sequelae to this change include: I) decreased urine NH& titratable acid, and net H+ excretion. , 2) due to the resulting positive H+ balance, mild metabolic acidosis gradually develops; 3) renal NH3 production increases in response to the acidosis and NHJ+ excretion rises so that H+ balance is again restored; 4) on restoration of K+ to the diet, urine pH promptly falls, NHI+ excretion rises sharply, titratable acid excretion returns to normal, and the metabolic acidosis subsides in a few days.

Moduretic-induced metabolic acidosis and hyperkalaemia.

A patient who developed significant metabolic acidosis and severe hyperkalaemia while taking Moduretic (amiloride and hydrochlorothiazide) is reported. During the period of hyperkalaemia (maximum potassium 7-6 mmol/l) the patient's whole body potassium content was normal. His acid-base balance and serum potassium returned to normal some 10 days after stopping the drug. The possible mechanism of...

It is generally recognized that potassium deprivation may result in the development of a plasma alkalosis, which is characterized by the paradoxical excretion of an acid urine (1-12). Conversely, the administration of sufficient potassium chloride results in a plasma acidosis and the simultaneous excretion of an alkaline urine (8, 13-16). Studies previously reported have shown that the dichotom...

Interaction of acidosis and increased extracellular potassium on action potential characteristics and conduction in guinea pig ventricular muscle.

We studied the individual and combined effects of extracellular acidosis and increases in extracellular potassium on action potential characteristics and conduction in order to gain a better understanding of the effects of acute ischemia. At each level of potassium between 2.7 and 17 mm, acidosis induced by increasing Pco2 (respiratory acidosis) and by decreasing HCO3- (metabolic acidosis) decr...

Lactic Acidosis Triggers Starvation Response with Paradoxical Induction of TXNIP through MondoA

Although lactic acidosis is a prominent feature of solid tumors, we still have limited understanding of the mechanisms by which lactic acidosis influences metabolic phenotypes of cancer cells. We compared global transcriptional responses of breast cancer cells in response to three distinct tumor microenvironmental stresses: lactic acidosis, glucose deprivation, and hypoxia. We found that lactic...

Acute metabolic acidosis: characterization and diagnosis of the disorder and the plasma potassium response.

ABSTRACT. Despite the high incidence of acute metabolic acidosis, there are no reliable human data to enable physicians to accurately diagnose this disorder. In addition, there is uncertainty about the direction and magnitude of plasma potassium changes in acute metabolic acidosis. The systemic and renal acid-base, electrolyte, and endocrine response to acute acid loads (imposed by three timed ...
